    Mexico City weekend getaway

So excited to visit Mexico City again for a short weekend stay. I couldn’t await this longed-for weekend, so my list was fully packed with things I wanted to see and do. I really had to remind myself to slow down a bit and not overdo, since the best way to discover the city’s neighborhoods is quite simple – just relax and let yourself go.

I really love to dive into this city with its cosmopolitan and vibrant people and colonias. There are just so many great things out there waiting to be discovered.

This time, it was the first time I went there by car. Before you ask, yes – there is a lot of traffic. But with a good gps like waze (and a good driver, but also good gps reader too, haha) you won’t lose your way. In the city, it’s best to use uber: reasonable prices, comfy and secure.

So when you have seen all of the city’s fabulous sights (and that won’t be too soon, believe me) like Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Zocalo, Museum of Anthropology, Soumaya or Chapultepec, just to name a few, take your time and head to one of the city’s lovely colonias. I’d recommend you pick one for a day and stay there. Even if the colonias are kind of close to each other, you’ll have a far more relaxed stay.

My favorite neighborhoods in the city are Polanco, la Condesa and la Roma, great for eating and drinking, shopping and enjoying the city’s people.

Posh Polanco is great for a relaxed (if you don't mind the posh, dressed up people, haha), easy-going Saturday afternoon, especially the area around parque Lincoln with its many cafes, bars and restaurants. Stroll down Virgilio, have a drink here and there, enjoy great comida and join the locals when they play their favorite game to see and be seen (I never saw people dressing up as if they're going to a wedding or gala dinner, just to have - breakfast - on a Sunday morning. Crazy. But it's fun to watch, haha). Some really nice restaurants I’ve been to and recommend are Brassi (French style brasserie), Le Pain Quotidien (great for breakfast), Prosecco and La Loggia (Italian food). Polanco is also a good stop for a stroll or (window) shopping (many things, especially imported stuff, is really expensive compared to Euro prices, even with the weak peso). I was curious to see the new Palacio de Hierro in Polanco, a gigantic department store dedicated to all kinds of designer fashion.

Add a chilly Sunday and head to Condesa where you can wander around parque Espana and parque Mexico (where you have free Wifi!) and have a coffee in one of the many sidewalk cafes nearby. Watch the many dogs and their owners taking a stroll or having a bath (the dogs, obviously), which is really fun to see. Let your weekend end at the rooftop bar of hotel Condesa DF, where you can enjoy cool drinks and good music.

Next time, I will definitely spend a whole day in la Roma, already excited to discover lots of beautiful new places (my list is growing, I’ll keep you posted). Let me just give you a little appetizer. When heading to Roma, the restaurant Maximo Bistrot is a really lovely go-to place. They serve a daily changing menu made of local produce, so you can be sure you’ll get the freshest delicious food on your table. It’s a modern French cuisine with Mexican influences style.

But - if you want to go there on a Saturday evening - don’t forget to make your reservation quite early as they are well booked in advance. Little tip from my side, if you couldn’t make it to their reservation book, just drop by in the afternoon and ask the nice staff to add your name to the evening’s waiting list. This way, you’ll get your table (with a bit of luck) anyway.

If you have any tips for Mexico City, I’d be curious to find out.
